The Bayshore Elementary School District Governing Board has five elected members, each serving a four-year term.  Elections are held in even-numbered years, and terms are staggered with either two or three seats open each election. Individuals interested in serving a term in office file for candidacy through the San Mateo County Elections Office.

  • Set the district’s strategic vision, which helps ensure that there is always a true-north, multi-year roadmap for the district
  • Oversee the budget and ensure that the district spends community taxpayer dollars responsibly
  • Focus on governance (the “what” of the district) while deferring to staff for the day-to-day operations (the “how”)
  • Manage the superintendent, including her goals
  • Advocate for public education on behalf of students

Key to a healthy working relationship is a shared understanding of and respect for the differences between the board’s roles/responsibilities and those of the superintendent.

  • The School Board governs the district and the Superintendent manages the district and advises the board.
  • The School Board approves and monitors the strategic plan and the Superintendent executes the strategic plan and identifies needs. 
  • The School Board reviews and adopts policies and the Superintendent recommends/creates procedures and implements policies. 
  • The School Board adopts and monitors the budget, and the Superintendent prepares, administers, and monitors it. 
  • The School Board establishes criteria for, approves, and monitors student success, and the Superintendent directs and evaluates student success.
  • The School Board establishes hiring policies and hires/assesses the superintendent, and the Superintendent interviews, recommends, hires, directs, evaluates, promotes, and trains.
  • The School Board provides guidelines for collective bargaining and ratifies contracts, and the Superintendent monitors the process within the guidelines.

School board members are subject to the Brown Act, which prevents a majority of board members from discussing, deliberating, or taking action on items outside of school board meetings. Put simply, the board as a whole cannot discuss board action items outside of public board meetings.

AGENDAS, MINUTES, AND PACKETS

The Bayshore Elementary School District will now be using GAMUT online for our School Board Meetings. This site is used by the Board of Education to organize, manage, and align critical information for the district including board policies and board meetings. We invite all of our community stakeholders to access this site to better understand the work that is happening in our district and we welcome your input and dialog to help us best serve our students. You can access all documents related to our board meetings from September 10, 2019 forward HERE.

The Bayshore Board normally meets on the second Thursday of every month for Open Session at 6:15 pm with Closed Session following immediately. Unless otherwise posted, all meetings will be held at The Bayshore School.
